Garrett's Hideout

Books and board games, reviewed straight, no consensus padding.

About

Illustrated portrait of Garrett Holloway

I've worked water treatment for going on eleven years now, the last six of them on nights. It's a job built around reading instruments and knowing the difference between a real problem and a sensor lying to you, which is probably why I have zero patience for an unclear rulebook or a stat that doesn't hold up under a second look. The plant runs itself most nights. I read and I play games in the gaps.

I run the night shift at a municipal water treatment plant outside Toledo, Ohio, which means most of what I read and play happens between 2am and 6am with a coffee going cold next to a clipboard of readings. I don't take review copies, I don't run ads, and I don't review anything I haven't actually finished. If a book or a game shows up here, I paid for it and I sat with it long enough to have something real to say.

Where I am: Toledo, Ohio

Started this site in 2026 mostly because I kept losing track of what I actually thought of something a month after I finished it. Now it's written down.

What's here

Book reviews, board game reviews, and personal essays. No schedule, no affiliate links, nothing sponsored. I write about a book or a game after I've actually finished it and have something to say, which is why the dates on here are irregular.
